Description |
Monochrome print on paper showing a view of the sv Otterburn entering the James Watt Dock, Greenock on 5 August 1866. Seven years after the first sod was cut, and five years after the laying of the foundation stone, the James Watt Dock was opened on 5th August 1886. This was an occasion of great public celebration in the town, and was considered at the time as the greatest event in the history of Greenock and its harbours. The first boat into the dock, cutting through a blue riband, was the "Otterburn", a sailing ship belonging to the Provost of the time, Robert Shankland (1826-1889), which entered the dock towards the end of the day's activities. |
