Description |
Oil painting on panel entitled 'Daniel Weir (1796-1831)', Greenock poet and publisher by John Fleming (1792 Glasgow - 1845 Greenock). Unsigned and undated. The work is undated but was painted before 1831. It shows a head and shoulders portrait of a man, facing slightly left, his head turned towards the viewer. He has dark hair and eyes and is shown wearing a dark jacket, a light cream coloured waistcoat and a dark cravat. Behind him on the left is a red curtain serving as a backdrop. Conserved with the generous assistance of the Scottish Museums Council. Daniel Weir, the first historian of Greenock, was born on 31 March 1796 and died on 11 November 1831. His father was a merchant. Weir served an apprenticeship in book selling and had a business at 57 Cathcart Street, Greenock. He contributed several songs to 'Scottish Minstrelsy' by R.A. Smith and edited three volumes of lyric poems under the titles of 'The National Minstrel', 'The Sacred Lyre' and 'Lyrical Gems'. Other poems by him appeared in Glasgow newspapers and in the Greenock Advertiser. His 'History of Greenock' appeared in 1829 and Fleming was a subscriber to the first edition of Weir's History of Greenock. |
