Description |
A nineteenth century ceremonial paddle from the Tubuai Islands (formerly called the Austral Islands) in dark wood. The paddle decorated over the entire surface with carved pattern. The end of the handle is carved with various anthropomorphic faces. The paddle has sustained damage to the handle and around the edges of the paddle. These paddles were originally used as dance wands and became popular trade items with Europeans in the early nineteenth century. |
