Description |
Engraving on paper entitled 'View of the Middle Church of Greenock and Cathcart Square' by an unknown artist. The work shows urban scene with a view of a church with spire and colonnaded entrance with square with figures, horse and carriage in the foreground. Buildings to the left and right. This engraving gives a good idea of how Cathcart Square, Greenock reflected the prosperity of the town fine buildings and even the creation of this print is, in itself, indicative of the growing importance of the town. By 1810 the wealth of Greenock was sufficient to attract the artists John Fleming and Robert Salmon to the town. The merchant class of the area offered enough patronage to enable professional artists to survive as portrait painters and marine artists. |
