Oil painting on canvas entitled 'Newark Castle, Port Glasgow' by an unknown artist. Unsigned and undated. The work was painted between 1862 and 1881 and shows a view of the eastern side of Newark Castle, looking downriver. In the foreground is an inlet with a male figure standing onshore and a rowing boat approaching the shore. Beyond are figures bathing and a sailing boat on the left side. On the left central is Newark Castle with smoking chimney and to the right a steam boat. On the far left is an enclosed garden or orchard and beyond are the masts of sailing vessels. Above the scene is a heavily white clouded blue sky. |
