Description |
A Japanese ivory netsuke, period unknown, in the form of a figure of the god Fukurokuju, one of the Shichi Fukujin or Seven Gods of Happiness. Fukurokuju represents wisdom, longevity, virility and fertility and was Chinese in origin. His name, when broken down, means happiness, riches and longevity. The netsuke follows tradition and shows him with a large head, big eyes and long white beard and wearing the garments of an old Chinese scholar. |
