Oil painting on canvas entitled 'Duncan Darroch, 5th of Gourock, Renfrewshire, Lord of the Barony of Gourock (1868-1923)' by Sydney Watts White (1870-1945). Signed and dated 'Sydney W. Whyte 1931' at the lower right by the artist. The painting is a posthumous portrait showing a full length portrait of the subject as a middle aged man with a moustache dressed in highland military regalia with medals, military insignia, kilt, sporran, hat and cockade. Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Darroch of Gourock was born in 1868 and was a professional soldier, retiring in 1910, with the rank of Major (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders). He served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Territorial Forces Reserve and was recalled to the colours during the First World War. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant of Renfrewshire. During the war he served in Sinai and was wounded during the Gallipoli campaign. He survived the end of the war but never fully recovered, eventually dying of his wounds in 1923. |
