Description |
First World War period British recruitment propaganda lithograph poster by WET. The poster is filled with an image of the RMS Lusitania sinking after being struck by a torpedo. The ship bows are submerged and the stern is rising clear of the sea. Fires and explosions are shown on the funnels upper structure. Passnger filled lifeboats are being launched and in the foreground figures in the water clinging to gloating debris. The title text at the top is: 'IRISHMEN AVENGE THE LUSITANIA'. At the lower left are the artist's initials 'WET'. Beneath the main image is the text: 'JOIN AN IRISH REGIMENT TO-DAY.' At the base of the poster in smaller text is 'ISSUED BY THE CENTRAL COUNCIL FOR THE ORGANISATION OF RECRUITING IN IRELAND.' and 'John Shuley and Co., Dublin.' |
