Description |
Oil painting on panel entitled 'Shipping off Greenock' by Robert Salmon (c 1775 Whitehaven, Cumbria - c 1851). Initialled and dated 'RS 1818' by the artist. Reverse inscribed 'Painted by R. Salomon No.283' by the artist. The work shows a scene of the River Clyde off Greenock with the Custom House and Scotts' shipyard in the background. In the centre foreground is a vessel is changing masts. possibly a Naval vessel, as it is flying the Union Jack and has gun ports. On the right in the background is Scotts' shipyard with a vessel ready for launching. It may be the 'Christian', completed in 1818, the launch also being recorded in a painting by Salmon (now in the collection of Glasgow Museums). |
