Nineteenth century ceremonial carved wooden mallet with tower design used in the laying of the foundation stone of the Municipal Buildings, Greenock. The mallet has four silver bosses set into the wood, they are inscribed: [1] 'Mallet used by Provost Dugald Campbell in laying Foundation Stone' [2] 'Greenock Municipal Buildings Foundation Stone laid 6th August 1881 in the North East Pier of the tower' [3] 'Presented to Provost Campbell by Hugh and David Barclay Architects'. [4] Greenock sailing ship crest. |
