Oil painting on canvas entitled 'The Channel Fleet off Greenock, 27th August 1861' by William Clark (1803 Greenock - 1883 Greenock). Unsigned and undated. The painting shows the River Clyde with a fleet of nine naval sailing ships (the Channel Fleet) with Trafalgar in centre. Several rowing boats, figures and riverbank and town in background. The vessels are named on the bottom frame slip frame from left to right: 'DONEGAL (81 guns), CONQUEROR (76 guns), ABUKIR (86 guns), CENTURION (68 guns), TRAFALGAR (60 guns), HERO (79 guns), REVENGE (73 guns), EDGAR (71 guns) & HOGUE (60 guns)'. |
