Lithograph print on paper entitled 'Launch of H.M. Steam Frigate Greenock' by an unknown artist. Unsigned and undated. The prints shows the launch of the steam frigate 'Greenock' from the yard of Scotts' Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd., Greenock in 1849 as viewed from the river. Published by Maclure & Macdonald, 57 Buchanan Street, Glasgow. HMS Greenock was the first steam frigate built on the Clyde. She was launched on Thursday 3 May 1849, 1413 tons, length 213ft and breadth 37ft 4in. In 1852 she was transferred to the Australian Royal Mail Steam Navigation Co. and renamed MELBOURNE. On the 19 January 1874 she was abandoned, for an unknown reason, on a passage from Calcutta to Dundee. |
