Description |
Lithograph print on paper entitled 'Britannia icebound at Boston' showing the RMS Britannia leaving Boston. This print is a monochrome reproduction of a colour lithograph by Augustus Guy de Vaudricourt (fl 1835-1851) after a sketch by J.C. King. The print shows the British and North American (Cunard Line) steamship Britannia (built by Robert Duncan's shipyard in Greenock, Scotland) leaving East Boston, Massachusetts, USA on 3 February 1844 on a voyage to Liverpool. The merchants of Boston contributed towards paying for a channel 7 miles long and 100 ft wide to be cut through the ice after the ship had become icebound in Boston harbour. |
